Now a major motion picture starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried.

Don’t miss the #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling, addictive psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist that’s burning up Instagram and TikTok—Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid is perfect for fans of Ruth Ware, Lisa Jewell, and Verity.

Every day I clean the Winchesters’ beautiful house top to bottom. I collect their daughter from school. And I cook a delicious meal for the whole family before heading up to eat alone in my tiny room on the top floor.

I try to ignore how Nina makes a mess just to watch me clean it up. How she tells strange lies about her own daughter. And how her husband Andrew seems more broken every day. But as I look into Andrew’s handsome brown eyes, so full of pain, it’s hard not to imagine what it would be like to live Nina’s life. The walk-in closet, the fancy car, the perfect husband.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out … and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late.

But I reassure myself: the Winchesters don’t know who I really am.

They don’t know what I’m capable of …

This book is a thrilling psychological suspense novel that kept me hooked from beginning to end. The story follows Millie, a woman with a troubled past, who starts working as a housemaid for the seemingly perfect family of Andrew and Nina. As she becomes more involved in their lives, Millie uncovers dark secrets that put everything at risk.

McFadden does an excellent job of building tension, with each twist revealing new layers of deceit and mystery. The characters are well-developed, particularly Millie, whose complex emotions and backstory are revealed gradually. The pacing is fast, and the suspense keeps escalating, making it hard to put the book down.

The media could not be loaded.

The Housemaid is a fast paced thriller with sharp twists, a tense atmosphere and a story that keeps you guessing to the end. The writing is easy to follow, the pacing stays tight and it is the kind of book you can finish in a day because you want to see what happens next. With the movie about to release this is a great time to read the original story and see all the details that set it up.

If you want a gripping, twisty thriller this one is a very strong pick.

The book came in very good condition, and I started reading it right away …finished it in one sitting!

I absolutely loved The Housemaid by Freida McFadden. Millie’s character was my favorite…strong, sarcastic, and so real. Her little bits of humor made the dark story even more enjoyable. The short chapters kept me hooked and made it so easy to keep saying “just one more.”

It’s fast-paced, twisty, and completely addictive, a perfect psychological thriller!

    Perfectly delivered! – paperback cover

For me, it’s a solid 4.5 stars! I loved the ease of reading, particularly how Freida skips lengthy descriptions and dives straight into the story, maintaining a constant sense of suspense. Each page kept me eager for more, helped by the short, concise chapters.

However, I couldn’t give it a full 5 stars because, while the ending was satisfying and the plot overall was quite unexpected, there were a few moments where I could predict what was coming. These subtle instances left me feeling a bit unsurprised, which I find disappointing in thrillers. Despite this, it was an engaging and enjoyable read!

  5. Arna Thorarensen

    The best read ever

I enjoyed this story about Mille, a housemaid who struggles to find work due to her criminal record.

Millie meets Nina who hires her as a housemaid, but instantly she struggles with her new employer’s changing moods. She knows more is going on in the household; all the while falling for Nina’s husband, Andrew but not getting along with his daughter, Cecilia.

Millie meets Enzo, the family’s gardener who acts strangely and warns her about the family, telling her to be careful and that more is going on. She is confused and dislikes Nina who treats her badly, finding a way to resolve the strange incidences.

What I loved about this story was the action-filled drama, suspense, twists and turns, and brilliant, deep characters. I so recommend this first book in this series. Loved it.

I’m someone who gets bored of books quickly and tend to DNF. But this book was a page turner and I couldn’t put it down. I also loved the twist after twist. Well done and the chapters are not super long either, just straight to the point

It had been a LONG time since I haven’t been able to put a book down. I read this so fast, I had to order book 2 & 3! Loved it. Can’t wait to watch the film when I’m finished the series. Thank you Freida for helping me get back into reading again.

Millie has finally secured a high paying, steady job after getting fired from her waitressing job. She’s living in her car, lying to her parole officer and literally clinging to her last hope when Nina Winchester calls her to offer her a housekeeping job in the home she shares with her family. Millie can start saving money, stay out of jail where she spent the last ten years, and possibly the best part- sleep in a bed.
Nina Winchester is the matriarch of the Winchester home. She seemingly has it all. Gorgeous, rich husband. Adorable daughter. Vice president of the PTA. But above all that, she is a bit “eccentric.” Everyday Millie cleans the house spotless, and every morning she wakes up the find it completely trashed again. Not to mention she also has to deal with Nina’s spoiled daughter. The only good part of this deal seems to be Nina’s husband, Andrew.

Nothing is as it seems in The Housemaid. Everyone has secrets, and this is one of those stories that keeps you guessing from the beginning. I will admit that by the 60% mark I was feeling a little bored, but immediately got sucked right back in. This isn’t one of those stories where I was left with all the answers, but I definitely had all the answers I needed. It is one of those stories that works backwards in a way until you figure everything out.
Fair warning, if you don’t like unrealistic endings, this book is not for you. But for a fast paced thriller I really enjoyed it.

This was a good quick read. The writing is simple and flows. The twist was good and it made me understand the characters point of view.
