Kraft Smooth Peanut Butter, 2kg

I used to think all peanut butter was the same until I lived abroad and tried every brand I could find. None had that same smooth texture or familiar taste I grew up with. Maybe it’s nostalgia, or maybe Kraft really has its own little magic, either way, this one hits the spot every time. It’s perfectly balanced in nutiness, creaminess and sweetness, and works for everything from toast to baking. The 2kg jar lasts a while and stays fresh until the last scoop. A pantry staple that never disappoints!

Ordering it from Amazon was surprisingly reassuring too: it arrived fresh, well-sealed, and with that same “right off the shelf” quality I hoped for. Sometimes, comfort food isn’t just about flavor, it’s about coming home in a spoonful.

This peanut butter tastes excellent, is perfectly smooth and spreads easily. The taste is not to sweat or salty, it is just right. The peanut butter is perfectly consistent, even after being in the fridge for weeks, the oils will not separate and the consistency will remain the same. Peanut butter is very versatile, can be spread on toast, used in cookies, as a dip or even eaten on its own as my wife likes to do.
If you take a look at the ingredients list, you will see 7 ingredients. These ingredients are combined to create this perfectly emulsified, great tasting, long lasting peanut butter. In the USA, anything with the label peanut butter has to contain at least 90% peanuts by law, otherwise it is called a ‘peanut butter spread’. In Canada, where peanut butter was invented (Montreal) no such law exists so the consumer does not know how much actual peanuts goes into the product.
The second ingredient ‘soy bean oil’ is regarded as a healthy oil and is used to prevent the oils naturally found in peanuts from separating and rising to the top of the jar, like in natural peanut butter.
The third ingredient ‘corn maltodextrin’ is a highly processed white powder that is used to thicken the peanut butter, reduce the fat content per serving and keep the texture of the product. It is made from processed corn, has a neutral taste and has less than 20% sugar, however it adds carbohydrates to the servings.
The third ingredient is sugar, which most people already know is used to sweeten the peanut butter and improve the taste. Peanuts on their own have zero added sugar obviously (although naturally contains 70mg per 15g). This product adds 1 gram of sugar per 15g of peanut butter.
The forth ingredient is hydrogenated vegetable oil. This is used to improve the taste, texture and improve shelf life of the product. In this product they take, cotton seed and rapeseed oil which are liquid at room temperature, and they add hydrogen atoms to it. These types of oil are known to negatively affect heart health, inflammation and blood sugar. So this is probably the worst ingredient in this product. Being listed between salt and sugar, we can assume that there is between 60 and 100mg of this ingredient added per 15g.
The fifth ingredient is salt, which improves the flavor and everyone loves salt. Peanuts on their own have less than 3mg of sodium per 15 grams. This product has 60mg of sodium per 15g, so they add around 57mg per 15 grams of peanut butter.
The sixth ingredient is mono and diglycerides. This is typically used to help water and oil blend, to improve consistency and texture in the peanut butter. This is created by taking animal fat or vegetable oil and subjecting it to heat and adding an alkaline catalyst in a chemical reaction to isolate these fats. They are generally regarded as safe.
15 grams of plain peanuts is 85 calories. 15 grams of this product is 90 calories. So the extra 6 ingredients that are not peanuts only make up about 5 calories per serving.
