A couple of years ago, our well pump required replacement. We were without water for almost two weeks. I didn’t want to repeat that experience, so I planned to set up a water storage tank as a buffer. Commercial solutions were mostly ludicrously expensive, so I looked at DIY solutions. Found this one, and I couldn’t be happier. Hooked it up to a recycled 12v power supply, connected to a 30-amp relay to control the well pump. put it all in a waterproof electrical box, wired the sensor wires into my storage tank, monitored it closely for a few weeks… it’s been working without issue for almost a year now.
It does exactly what I want. When the storage tank gets about 3/4 full, the sensor detects it, closes the relay, well pump turns on, fills the storage tank, and opens the relay again when the tank is full, shutting off the well pump.
It’s saving wear and tear on the well pump (doesn’t have to pressurize the house water any longer; just fills the storage–pressure is handled w/ a smaller (cheaper!) pressure pump fed by the storage tank). It’s rock-solid and super-simple tech; almost nothing to it. I use it for my home, not for some livestock tank or something–I need it to work, and it does.
Documentation is sparse and I’m grateful for the comments here. Wiring it up was a learning experience, but it was a fun puzzle.
I highly recommend this as a solution for any DIYer with a healthy sense of self-efficacy. I’m gonna order a backup, but it doesn’t look like I’ll need it any time soon.

Exactly what it looks like; it’s a relay you hook up to a pair of sensors with a simple state machine that will maintain the water level in a tank between the low and high sensor by either draining or filling the tank, depending on how you hook it up to a pump.
If the liquid in the tank is conductive enough, presumably you can just use wires as sensors. I did not try this; I used it to build a water tower to pressurize rain water which won’t conduct much, so instead I just used aquarium water level sensors that close the circuit (connect) when the water level is at or above them to fulfill the same role.
The only hiccup I had was the somewhat sparse documentation, though that is understandable given it is a very simple module. Specifically, the relay has no “off” — you’re supposed to connect your pump to ground and power through the relay to complete the circuit, using the central pin and then EITHER the “drain” or the “fill” pin. The way this works is that the board “remembers” whether it is filling or draining based on the sequence of the water level sensors.
TL;DR you need to power it off and then on again whenever you change between draining and pumping, and if you manually trigger the sensors in a pattern that is not consistent with that mode, you may get odd results.
Overall I am very happy with this item and would recommend it, I think you could use it for all sorts of things, not just pumps. Do understand that this is just a circuit board with some screw terminals; “some assembly required” would be an understatement. But it was exactly what I needed and it works great.

This sensor control board is ingenious designed in its practicality. Works flawlessly! I found it by chance because didn’t want to puncture holes in my water tank. Although I had doubts if aluminum strip sensor would work reliably. And, it does! Lol. Recommending this thing to everyone who needs irrigation water tank automation!
