The Backbone Controller has become an essential companion for my gaming adventures on the go. I purchased it specifically for business trips, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way.

I’ve been using the backbone for a while and it’s been a game-changer for mobile gaming.

The controller’s design is the first thing you notice. It’s sleek, ergonomic, and feels great in the hands, reminiscent of a traditional PlayStation controller. The build quality is solid, and it doesn’t add much weight to the phone, which is a big plus for longer gaming sessions.

Pairing with the iPhone is a breeze, thanks to the Lightning connector. There’s no lag or connectivity issues, and the direct connection means you don’t have to worry about charging the controller separately.

The button layout and responsiveness are excellent. The controls feel intuitive, especially if you’re familiar with PlayStation controllers. The analog sticks are precise, and the buttons have a satisfying click to them.

However, there are a couple of downsides. First, it’s a bit pricey compared to some other mobile gaming controllers. Also, it’s specifically designed for iPhones with a Lightning port, so it’s not versatile if you use multiple devices or plan to switch to USB-C in the future.

In conclusion it is a fantastic choice for serious mobile gamers, especially those who appreciate the PlayStation controller layout. It’s easy to use, well-built, and significantly enhances the gaming experience on your iPhone. The price and device compatibility are the only considerations to keep in mind before purchasing.

Starting with the cons…
-The face buttons on this device are far louder than they have need be. Whoever in engineering decided “Hey, lets put a metal plate under the buttons” is a bafoon. D pad is fine, and the same rubber piece should be used on the face buttons. It’s a controller, not a flipping razer keyboard.

-Every time you plug the device into your phone it will auto open the app if it’s installed. (Annoying)

-The Backbone “Home” button doesn’t appear to be re programable.

– Overpriced. There are competing products that do effectively the same thing, and the only thing that backbone truly offers uniquely is a playstation variant.

-No additional accessories. The company that makes this sells an additional carrying case, but nothing else like pads to give better and more comfortable grips for people without children’s hands.

– Screen capture button should have it’s location switched with the hamburger me

Pro’s:

-More Portable than a controller, Handheld PCs, or something like a PS Portal.

-Provides controls for large and small phones while giving the look of a solid single device

-Has both USB charging in, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack for some buds or IEMs.

-Works REALLY well with emulation

All in all I’m glad I bought this. I only bought it because it was on sale at the time (~90$ over 139$ Canadian it’s going for regular) Given that there are competing devices I don’t think there is a justification for the price. Quality is nice, but this device goes for the price of two first party controllers.

I’ve had lots of fun using this with emulation, aswell as a selection of games from the Netflix service (Dead Cells + TMNT Shredders Revenge) aswell as google game pass games like Final Fantasy 7. This is a perfect device for travel, or being stuck in a medical situation that requires lots of sitting around. though if you pull it out in a library quiet area, the buttons will draw the attention of other with how loud they are (I won’t let that go, whoever put the metal plate in this thing is a complete fool and should feel bad).

It’s unfortunate that this device at it’s price point doesn’t provide anything additional. It would be acceptable to make this device larger and make it double as a battery extender. It’s also additionally unfortunate that the device has a home button that isn’t re programable.

The whole device would also be improved if the USB plug was on rails to make fitting folding devices better (Tried it on my older fold 3 with some success but it’s… not the best)

Overall I’m excited to try this with the Warframe Mobile beta coming out soon to android, and a little more hopeful that we see a generation 3 of this device in the future with quiet buttons, a better feature set, and an included carrying case bundle option.
Make the price better too.
