Description

A twisting, pulse-pounding thriller from Freida McFadden, the New York Times bestselling author of The Housemaid and The Coworker

“You must be our new neighbors!” Mrs. Lowell gushes and waves across the picket fence. I clutch my daughter’s hand and smile back: but the second Mrs. Lowell sees my husband a strange expression crosses her face. In that moment I make a promise. We finally have a family home. My past is far, far behind us. And I’ll do anything to keep it that way…

I used to clean other people’s houses―now, I can’t believe this home is actually mine. The charming kitchen, the quiet cul-de-sac, the huge yard where my kids can play. My husband and I saved for years to give our children the life they deserve.

Even though I’m wary of our new neighbor Mrs. Lowell, when she invites us over for dinner it’s our chance to make friends. Her maid opens the door wearing a white apron, her hair in a tight bun. I know exactly what it’s like to be in her shoes. But her cold stare gives me chills…

The Lowells’ maid isn’t the only strange thing on our street. I’m sure I see a shadowy figure watching us. My husband leaves the house late at night. And when I meet a woman who lives across the way, her words chill me to the bone: Be careful of your neighbors.

Did I make a terrible mistake moving my family here?

I thought I’d left my darkest secrets behind. But could this quiet suburban street be the most dangerous place of all?

From New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Freida McFadden comes the next installment of the unbelievably twisty, tension-packed and globally bestselling Housemaid series. This book can be enjoyed as a standalone read: and once you start, it will have you up all night racing through the pages until the final explosive twist.

THE HOUSEMAID IS WATCHING IS BOOK 3 IN THE Housemaid Series by bestselling author Freida McFadden. Having loved the previous books in this series I was anxious to start The Housemaid Is Watching.

The Novels in Housemaid Series Include:
    1. The Housemaid (2022)
    2. The Housemaid’s Secret (2023)
    2.5. The Housemaid’s Wedding (2024)
    3. The Housemaid Is Watching (2024)

This is my review of The Housemaid Is Watching.

Now 11 years later, Millie is no longer a maid and married to Enzo, with two kids; daughter Ava, and 9-year-old Nico. Their offer has just been approved to purchase a house in the suburbs living in Long Island.

Millie used to clean other people’s houses but now, she can’t believe this home is actually a new beginning for their family. While the hefty mortgage and house expenses has taken its toll on the family, Millie and Enzo want to give their children a better life.

Millie is looking forward to making new friends with her neighbors but one of her neighbors Mrs. Lowell keeps flirting with Enzo, while as another noisy neighbor watches every move Millie takes. Then, Enzo hires their neighbor’s maid Martha, who keeps giving Millie strange looks and gives her the chills.

But Millie is sure she saw a shadowy figure watching them. She is warned to be careful of her neighbors. Did Millie make a terrible mistake moving her family here?

This is a fast-paced character-driven thriller that is sure to entertain. I loved this book and it kept me guessing right until the final reveal.

Many thanks to the author, and Poisoned Pen Press for my digital copy.

Mrs. Lowell, Millie’s new neighbor, warmly welcomes her and her family to the quiet cul-de-sac. But when she sees her husband, Enzo, her expression changes. When she settles to her family home things start happening. The Lowells’ maid makes her skin crawl, and she sees a mysterious figure lurking nearby. A woman from the house opposite advises her to be careful with neighbors. Suddenly, her once peaceful suburban street becomes the most dangerous place she has ever known and she begins to think perhaps she should not have moved there. Some secrets are revealed and conflicts arise as she struggles to save her family.

Millie and Enzo, my favorite quirky characters, are back. Millie is a multi-dimensional anti-heroine with questionable morality, and Enzo is her perfect counterpart. Their children introduce new facets that are refreshing and the story is quite suspenseful with a murder mystery element that I did not foresee – pure Freida! The time shift to 11 years ago was perfect and the new neighbors are very much creepy. Although the pacing slows down in the first half, the latter part of the show is very stimulating. Just seeing old characters and how they interact with each other was the highlight of the episode.

I am so sad that this series is over! Freida McFadden did a particularly great job with the ending as she gave the audience both a desire for more and a sense of contentment with the binge-worthy finale to The Housemaid series.

    Read it if you like
    ✔️ Mysterious neighbours
    ✔️ Suburban secrets
    ✔️ Watcher is the shadow
    ✔️ Psychological twist
    ✔️ Family under threat

    Happy reading!

I’ve been getting into Freida McFadden’s thrillers recently, and The Housemaid’s Watching definitely kept me hooked from the first chapter. Her books are always easy to read in one or two sittings, and this one was no different, the pacing is fast, the chapters are short, and every time I tried to put it down, something wild happened in the next chapter.

    What I really liked:

    • The suspense builds early
The book sets up tension right away, and I loved how the atmosphere feels unsettling but not confusing. You can tell something is wrong, but you don’t know exactly what.

    • Twists on twists
Freida is known for her plot twists, and while I guessed a couple of them, there were still moments that genuinely caught me off guard. The last third of the book moves so quickly that I read it all in one sitting.

    • Fun, binge-able writing style
If you like thrillers that aren’t slow or overly descriptive, this is perfect. The chapters are short, and the story never drags.

What didn’t work as well for me:

    • Some scenes felt unrealistic
A few character decisions were a bit dramatic or unbelievable, even for a thriller. I had moments where I was like, “Okay, no one would actually do that.”

    • Certain characters felt underdeveloped
I wanted more depth from a couple of the side characters. Their motivations didn’t always make sense.

Good value and delivered to door. Could not find it at local stores. Gave as a gift.

Well I really did enjoy reading this book even though I found it was quite repetitive with descriptions and explaining. Millie was annoying in this book, I found her behaviour and attitude didn’t go with the woman who used to rescue battered women.
She was whiny and a pushover and as a social worker she clearly needs more training, cause how can you misread those red flags.
The book was a good read I was kept on my seat I figured out one off at the twists but didn’t see that Epilogue (no spoilers).
Solid 3.5 stars ⭐⭐⭐ Millie as a character was a let down and so was Enzo who I liked in book 2.
Certain plot points could’ve been fleshed out and I found the ending was rushed, everything was too connected and the chapters with Ada I didn’t feel like I was reading an 11 year old kid.
I won’t even address the parenting skills of Enzo and Millie 🙄🗡 Millie hasn’t grown as a character after all she’s been through she just turned into an insecure woman with no backbone, I was expecting so much more from this book but it clearly ran out of momentum.

But had to finish the series! Enough twists to keep me reading. Overall pretty good book. My least favourite of the 3

I love her books, but this series was awesome. It’s such an easy-to-read book and series. I would definetly recommend.

The Housemaid Is Watching continues the story with a familiar tone and steady suspense. The pacing is quick and the short chapters make it easy to keep reading. It builds tension gradually and maintains an uneasy atmosphere throughout.

The plot focuses more on psychological elements and observation rather than constant twists. While some moments are more predictable if you have read the earlier books, the execution is still engaging and keeps the story moving. It works best if you are already invested in the series.

Overall, an entertaining and fast paced read that delivers suspense and works well as a continuation for fans of the Housemaid series.

I love Freidas’s book, but this one was very boring. The first half of the book is very boring, the storyline is very flat. It 0icks up closer to the end. I read this s3ries, the first book was amazing. The second is so so and this one is disappointing.
